With hot pans, sharp knives and sometimes slippery floors, a kitchen can be an accident waiting to happen. With a few guidelines, we can make the kitchen a safer place for everyone. It's very important to stay safe in the kitchen when you are cooking. We encourage parents to watch our short kitchen safety video and read our best practices for safety and hygiene with your kids before the session

1. Set yourself up properly and be well prepared.

  • Always cook with an adult present.
  • Wash hands thoroughly – at least 20 seconds with warm soapy water.
  • Wear close-toed shoes (never cook barefoot or with open shoes on).
  • Always tie your hair back and avoid loose clothing.
  • Wash all of your fresh produce (fruit, veggies, leaves etc) prior to using
  • Get all of your ingredients ready before you start cooking, so you don't rush later on
  • Wear an apron – an apron is your first line of defence when cooking. If you spill hot oil or water on yourself, you can quickly remove the apron before the hot liquid burns you. It also prevents your clothes from getting dirty.

2. Be extra careful around hot kitchen equipment.

  • Be very careful, as some cooking equipment can burn you in under a second!
  • Always assume the oven, stovetop, pots, and pans are hot.
  • If you are not sure if a tray or pot is hot, do not touch it with your bare hands, ask an adult to help or use a tea towel or oven mitts to help move it.
  • Never open the oven without oven mitts and adult supervision
  • When opening the oven, say “Hot oven opening!”
  • Stand back and slowly pull the oven door open. Be cautious of hot air that will quickly escape.
  • Keep your “elbows up” when stirring at the stove to avoid “lazy wrist” burns.
  • Never leave food unattended while it is cooking, whether it's in a pan or in the oven. If you must step away from the kitchen, make sure you let someone know to keep an eye on the food. If everyone is leaving the kitchen, make sure you turn the heat/oven off.

3. Be aware of your surroundings.

  • Safe cooking relies on everyone's awareness. Be constantly aware of your surroundings and what’s going on in the kitchen, as this will help you protect yourself and others around you
  • Turn pot and pan handles to the back of the stove so you don’t bump into them when walking by
  • Moving equipment – if you are holding a knife, hot pot, pan or oven tray around the kitchen, in a big loud voice let everyone know. You don’t want to bump into someone with a sharp knife in your hand!

4. Keep your kitchen clean and tidy.

  • Avoid cross contamination – always use separate cutting boards and tools when preparing raw meats and veggies.
  • Spills – if we spill water or oil on the floor or even accidentally drop an egg, tell the people around you to watch out for it and then clean it up straight away. Let’s not let anyone slip or slide around the kitchen.
  • Keep the stovetop clean and clear of utensils, dish towels, or other items that could catch fire.
